Most residents will never spend much time thinking about the court system until the moment they have to. A traffic stop, a citation, a warrant, a first hearing. Suddenly, a system that once felt distant becomes very personal. In Farmington and Farmington Hills, many of those first moments happen not in front of a judge, but in front of a magistrate. That is why this conversation matters.
In a recent episode of Seeing Clearly, I sat down with Michael Sawicky, longtime magistrate in the 47th District Court and current candidate for judge, to talk about how the local court system actually works and why residents should understand it before they ever need it.
As Sawicky explained, magistrates carry much of the court’s early and high-volume work.
“Magistrates their caseload is more front loaded and high volume. So we do a lot of the initial hearings that come before the courts… like arraignments, we set bonds, we review and authorize search warrants.”
That role is more important than many people realize. For most citizens, district court is the justice system. It is where they first encounter legal procedure, courtroom structure, and the real weight of due process. In the 47th District Court, which serves Farmington and Farmington Hills, that work touches everyday life in direct ways.
One of the most useful points Sawicky made was about where cases truly begin.
“All cases… they do not just start at the top and work their way down. They start at the bottom and they work their way up.”
That is worth pausing over. People often think of justice as something decided in dramatic final moments, but local courts are where the process begins. They are where decisions first shape a person’s experience with the law.
Our discussion also explored the human side of the courtroom. Many people enter court feeling anxious, confused, or intimidated by what they have seen on television. Sawicky addressed that directly.
“It is not like on TV… you just need to take a deep breath and listen to what is happening.”
Sawicky is running for judge in the 47th District Court, and viewers should take time to study his background, his experience, and his positions for themselves. On Seeing Clearly, the purpose is not to do the thinking for you. The purpose is to help you ask better questions and understand the systems that affect your community.

As I often say, be a ferret. Dig deeper. Check the facts. Do not stop at the headline. For voters in Farmington and Farmington Hills, that is not just good advice. It is part of being an informed citizen.
