Valerie Knol: Farmington Hills City Council Candidate

In this episode of I Can See Clearly Now, I spoke with Valerie Knol, a candidate for Farmington Hills City Council, as part of an ongoing series of interviews with individuals seeking local office. The goal of these conversations is to give residents a clear understanding of each candidate’s background, priorities, and approach to governing in a council-manager form of government.

Valerie brings extensive experience to this race. She has served on the Farmington Hills City Council for twelve years and previously served eight years on the City of Farmington Council. Having lived in the community for more than three decades, she described her service as rooted in long-term commitment rather than short-term ambition.

“I have been honored to serve on city council in Farmington Hills for the past 12 years.”

We discussed the realities of serving in a part-time elected role while maintaining a full-time career. Valerie outlined her professional background in both government and the private sector, including work in the Michigan House of Representatives and the automotive industry, and described how that experience informs her approach to fiscal management and service delivery.

Campaign finance was another area of discussion. Valerie explained the rising costs associated with local campaigns, particularly mailings, and described her fundraising goals as modest and pragmatic. She emphasized that the bulk of her campaign support comes from within the Farmington Hills area and from long-standing professional and personal relationships.

“It’s extremely expensive to run a race.”

A significant portion of our conversation focused on the future of senior services in Farmington Hills. Valerie described extensive outreach to seniors and outlined the features they consistently request, including accessible facilities, recreational space, meal programs, and sustainable long-term funding. She emphasized that while the existing facility is aging, any new center must balance quality with financial responsibility.

“What we don’t want is to build this building and then not be able to afford it.”

We also discussed governance culture and collaboration. Valerie stressed that Farmington Hills functions best when council members work as a team, respect their defined roles, and avoid public infighting that can damage the city’s reputation and effectiveness.

“We do not want drama. We do not want infighting on city council.”

This episode of I Can See Clearly Now offers voters insight into how one City Council candidate views experience, fiscal responsibility, senior services, and collaborative leadership. The purpose is not endorsement, but clarity, so residents of Farmington Hills can evaluate candidates based on their stated priorities and record of service.
